- Appleton decreed the day of the arrival of the new sheriff a festival occasion…

- He paused and frowned the audience into a state of suspense…
- He hitched his holster a little forward again as he spoke and a deep silence fell upon the crowd…

- It was complete night before he reached the upper end of Eagle Head Cañon…
- In his excitement he sprang upright and stared…
- At first he saw no other occupant of the place…
- “Hands up!” said Lefty softly…
- “Your end of this here party is all over…
- “It’s a good move, pal…
- “If you sure want a drink before we start…
- Lefty tightened his grip on the gun as Malone reached deeper into the hutch…
- “I reckon,” he said hesitatingly…
- He was, as he said, a fairly good judge…
- The music stopped…
